Star Wars Episode I: Racer for the Nintendo 64 is a futuristic, high-speed sci-fi racing game developed and published by LucasArts. Originally released on May 18, 1999, the game captures the adrenaline-fueled thrill of the iconic podracing sequence from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Game Overview & Mechanics

Unlike item-based racers like Mario Kart, Episode I: Racer focuses strictly on pure speed, physics, and vehicle management. Players take control of dual-engine podracers screaming across alien landscapes at speeds exceeding 600 miles per hour.

  • The Campaign: The primary Tournament Mode acts as a career path where players race across 21 to 25 unique tracks spanning 8 different worlds, including the desert sands of Tatooine, methane lakes, and anti-gravity tunnels.
  • The Roster: You can choose from over 20 distinct pilots, including Anakin Skywalker (voiced by Jake Lloyd) and his fierce rival Sebulba.
  • Risk & Reward Controls: Pushing the analog stick forward triggers a powerful turbo boost, which runs the risk of overheating and damaging your engines. Players must actively deploy repair droids mid-race to fix damage, which temporarily slows the podracer down.
  • Upgrades & Customization: Winnings from tournament placements can be spent at Watto's shop or the local junkyard to buy vehicle parts (improving top speed, acceleration, braking, and cooling) or purchase extra repair droids.

Nintendo 64 Specific Features

The N64 version has several hardware-specific constraints and quirks compared to its PC and Dreamcast counterparts:

  • Expansion Pak Support: The game optionally utilizes Nintendo's Expansion Pak to increase its internal resolution from a standard 320x240 to a sharper 640x480 resolution.
  • Cartridge Limitations: Due to strict cartridge space limits, all pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes from the PC version were completely cut. Additionally, the John Williams musical score is heavily compressed and typically only triggers during the high-stakes final lap of a race.
  • Dual-Controller Code: A famous hidden easter egg allows players to input a cheat code to control their pod using two N64 controllers at once—holding one in each hand to independently operate the left and right engines, mimicking the actual movie cockpit.
  • Multiplayer: Out of the box, the N64 version was the premier way to experience local two-player split-screen head-to-head racing with friends.
