Nintendo 64 non oem reprodction Pokemon Snap video game cartridge.

Pokémon Snap is a classic first-person photography and simulation video game released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, it was a major departure from the traditional RPG format of the franchise, focusing on capturing Pokémon on film rather than catching them in Poké Balls.

Core Gameplay & Concept

Players step into the shoes of Todd Snap, a young photographer hired by Professor Oak. You are sent to Pokémon Island—a unique reserve split into distinct natural biomes—to document Pokémon behaving naturally in the wild.

  • On-Rails Safari: To ensure safety, Todd travels through courses automatically inside the Zero-One, an all-terrain, amphibious vehicle. The gameplay acts like an on-rails arcade shooter, where your "weapon" is a camera. You cannot stop or reverse the vehicle, meaning you must have quick reflexes to catch fleeting moments.
  • Interactive Tools: As you progress, you unlock special items to interact with the environment:
    • Pokémon Food (Apples): Lures Pokémon closer or feeds them.
    • Pester Balls: Gas-filled balls used to knock down, wake up, or irritate Pokémon to cause reactions.
    • Poké Flute: Plays music to make Pokémon dance or wake up sleeping species.
    • Dash Engine: Speeds up your vehicle to alter timing across the map.

Levels and Pokémon Count

The game features a relatively sparse roster of 63 of the original 151 Pokémon. Players explore seven unique courses:

  1. Beach
  2. Tunnel
  3. Volcano
  4. River
  5. Cave
  6. Valley
  7. Rainbow Cloud (a special final bonus level)

Scoring System

At the end of each run, you select your best photo for each species to show Professor Oak. He scores your photography based on distinct criteria:

  • Size: How well the Pokémon fills up the frame.
  • Pose: Action shots or rare behaviors yield higher points.
  • Technique: Whether the Pokémon is perfectly centered.
  • Same-species Bonus: Having additional Pokémon of the same type in the background boosts the score.

Cultural Legacy

For fans in 1999, Pokémon Snap was highly innovative because it was the first time Pokémon were rendered as fully animated 3D models outside of sprites. It also featured a massive real-world marketing campaign with Blockbuster Video stores, where players could take their physical N64 cartridges and print their favorite in-game snapshots onto actual stickers.

The game remains a beloved, nostalgic gem that successfully blended puzzle-solving mechanics with a theme-park-ride atmosphere. A long-awaited sequel, New Pokemon Snap, was eventually released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021.
