Released in 1977, Peter Gabriel—often referred to as Car due to its distinctive cover art—marked the debut solo album from the former Genesis frontman. Issued by Atco Records in the U.S. and Charisma Records in the U.K., the album was produced by Bob Ezrin, known for his theatrical work with Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd. The cover, photographed and manipulated by Hipgnosis, features Gabriel sitting in a rain-soaked car, with water streaks creating a surreal, almost dissolving effect.
The album introduced Gabriel’s eclectic and experimental approach to rock and art pop, featuring standout tracks like “Solsbury Hill,” a reflective anthem about his departure from Genesis, as well as “Moribund the Burgermeister” and “Modern Love,” which showcased his theatrical flair and genre-blending instincts.
