Hungarian-born Canadian conductor (Hungarian spelling János Sándor or Sándor János)

A familiar name to consumers of budget-line CDs on the Laserlight and Delta labels, among others; he has also recorded for the flagship label of his home country, Hungaroton.

He studied conducting at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, from which he graduated with distinction. For more than 20 years, he was the music director of the Györ Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1975 he became conductor of the Budapest State Opera.

He moved to Canada in 1991 and landed guest conducting engagements with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles. Sándor joined the University of Victoria as artist-in-residence in 1995 and became music director and conductor of the University of Victoria Orchestra and Chorus in 1998.
