Died August 25, 2001 in Marsh Harbour, Abaco Islands, The Bahamas (Aged 22) in an Airplane crash that also claimed the lives of 8 others after filming the music video for her single "Rock The Boat".
Daughter of Michael Haughton, sister of Rashaad Haughton. Niece of Record Executive Barry Hankerson and (by marriage) Soul legend Gladys Knight. Cousin of record executive Jomo Hankerson and rapper Tekomin Williams.
Married to controversial R&B Singer/Producer R. Kelly from 1994-1995 (annulled). At time of passing, in a relationship with (and had reportedly planned to marry) Hip-hop mogul Damon Dash.
Upon releasing her debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" in 1994, Aaliyah gained a steadily growing reputation for helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip hop, earning her the nicknames the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban pop".
A sophomore album "One In A Million" was released in 1996, and her final album, "Aaliyah", appeared earlier in the year of her tragic death.
To Date, Aaliyah's music has continued to achieve commercial success, as she has sold an estimated 24 to 32 million copies of her discography worldwide.
